A brief history of Horeke School
In order for you to understand the framework of this document it is important for you to know the whakapapa of its inception and creation.
The first school was situated at Okarari on the property just up from the school.
1920 The first day of school was 9th August, 1920The first teacher was Mr Roy Vincent Smith
10 students were enrolled and at the end of the year the roll increased to 20 pupils.
School changed from Okarari to Horeke in 1928
1936 roll was over 40 pupils.
Mr Crandle took charge in 1946 while he was still a prisoner of war.
In 1952 a new building was erected and the first to teacher to occupy this was
Mr Robinson. The new complex cost 11,000. Pounds.
The roll was in steady decline, falling from 357 in 1980 to 163 at the end of 1989. By the end of the decade the roll was mainly M?ori and Pasifika.
The success of the venture gave rise to the appointment of a further teacher, Mrs M Haggie, to set up a total immersion class in Te Reo Maori from the beginning of 1994.
In 2020 Horeke School was meant to have its Centenary celebrations however with the worldwide pandemic (Covid) and the closure of the country the celebrations had to be postponed.
